Abstract

By using various modes or multimodality such as visual, and verbal modes, comic is a good media of communication that can provides information, and generate an aesthetic reaction from the viewer. Multimodality, on the other hand, is the combination of various modes for strengthening, complementing, and expressing the meaning of an image or text expected to facilitate better learning. As semiotic resource where the modes can be found, comics can be analyzed using multimodal analysis. The objectives of this qualitative study is to analyze the kinds of aspects of visual and verbal modes of multimodality that were used by the English teacher within her comic, and observe the representation of those aspects of modes of multimodality in that comic. By utilizing content analysis, and the theory of visual grammar by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen, this study found and analyzed the aspects of visual and verbal modes of multimodality using the three metafunctions of ideational metafunction, interpersonal metafunction, and textual metafunction. Comic that was analyzed was comic that was used for teaching the tenth grade English material about ‘the expression of intention and plan’. This study found that both visual and verbal modes are presented, and used in combination in the comic. Moreover, this research also found the representation of those aspects of visual and verbal modes, which showed that these aspects of modes of multimodality are used in combination and represent a meaning. The function of the combination of these aspects of modes of multimodality is to depict a real conversation event that express the expression of intention and plan, so that the tenth grade students are able to understand the material.
