Abstract

Putri. N. E. (2020) The Analysis of Turn-Taking Strategies on English Language Class in 11th Grade Student of Science Three at SMA NEGERI 1 TEGINENENG Conversation cannot be separated for human life. Not only human even animals and plants can communicate and send their respective message signals. When communication begin each participant sends the messages based on whom they are talking and what topics should be discussed it is called social context. At present we know what is called conversation analysis. It is the subject of linguistic that discusses the patterns of conversation between participants and one of which is turn taking. The turn-taking system is a co-ordinate activity (Sidnell, Jack, 2010). Co-ordinate is interconnected between one speaker to another speaker as when the first speaker spoke, the second speaker listened and vice versa each participant took a turn. Then there are strategies that can arrange a conversation to run smoothly and efficiently it is called turn taking strategies. There are 3 types of turn taking strategies, namely taking the turn, holding the turn and yielding the turn (stenstorm: 2006). The purpose of this study is to answer the turn taking of what is used in the classroom with the participants are the teacher and students. This study uses a qualitative approach that analyzes the results of data captured using a video recorder. Based on H. Mazeland (2006) said the conversation analysis investigation began with a recorder / video ii recorder. After recording the data, I do the transcription of what the participant talk based on the video recorder. The transcript based on the theory from Gail Jefferson. Then, to analyze what type of turn taking is used by participants I used Stenstrom theory. Based on the findings in this study, it was concluded that there were several types of turn taking strategies that were not found due to circumstance and timing which were not suitable for use, including 'metacomment' and 'giving up' strategy. From this research it can be found that each individual has an original character that builds a conversation with a unique pattern.
