Abstract

This research aims to explore the influencing factors faced by students' English speaking skills and to explore how the factors influence the students' speaking skills, whether it will support or inhibit them. This research used a qualitative study method. The research was done at the English Department of Universitas Bandar Lampung in the third semester that consisted of 33 students. The data collected by doing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with all students and six students as a participant in the interview. The data was analyzed by combining the result from the questionnaire and interview. The questionnaires were conducted through a web application that is Google Form, whereas interviews conducted with students who has the excellent speaking ability in the class. The purpose of giving questionnaires knew the influencing factors in students' speaking skills. The interview is significant to find out the students' reasons for how the factors could influence their speaking (Tuan, 2015; Sounders & O’Brien, 2006). The results show that students' speaking ability could influence by some factors; they consist of performance conditions, affective factors, sociocultural factors, listening ability, topical knowledge, age or maturational constraints, environment, and learning community. Somehow, linguistic factors could influence students’ speaking skills, usually they about vocabulary. By doing this research, it will help us to realize the influencing factors in speaking English skills faced by students. We know which factors can help us to support students’ speaking ability. It will help the students to get a better speaking English process if we already know how motivated them.
