Abstract

Alda Alviani (2020). This research study analyzed the mother tongue interference of the students on English pronunciation. It aimed to find out the mother tongue interference on English pronunciation, the segmental sounds in the students’ English pronunciation interfered with their mother tongue and the factors causing the mother tongue interference. The writer analyzed the mother tongue interference on the students’ English pronunciation, especially in the segmental sounds. This research used a qualitative method as the writer want to give a detail explanation of mother tongue interference. There were 30 students as the subjects of this research. To collect the data from the subjects, the writer designed the interview and the students’ English speech by recording. Three points are provided in the interview. Those are the students’ information, the students’ English score, and the students’ language background. The interview used to get the information for the teachers about the factor causing interference. Then, the writer also recorded the students’ English speech to evaluate the interference of their mother tongue. The content of students’ English speech is about the students’ identities. Those include names, family, hobbies, dreams, and whatever they want to share. As a result, the writer found the mother tongue interference occurs in the pronunciation of English segmental sounds produced by the students. There were five mother tongues interference of the students, such as Indonesian, Javanese, Palembang, Bengkulu, and Semendo. In the consonants sounds the interference happened in the sounds /ð/, /θ/, /ʧ/, /ʃ/, /ʤ/, /ʒ/, /v/, /g/, the vowel and diphthong sounds the interference happened in the sounds /ӕ/, /ə/, /ɪ/, /ɑ/, /ε/, /ʊ/, /ʌ/, /eɪ/, /aɪ/ and /aʊ/.The two factors causing the mother tongue interference were the internal factor and the external factor.
